Drumming in Canada

Montreal is quite the cool city. Lots of unique districts, tremendous food, cafe culture and quite the drum presence.

In the summer months, Mount Royal park play host to one of North America's longest continuously gathering drum circles. "Tam-Tam" as it is known has been going on since the early 1970s. Originally, Tam-Tam (which is French for hand-drum) began as a gathering of local African drummers that had emigrated to Canada. It grew to a counter culture meet up spot and has grown from there. On any given summer weekend, you can find 20 to 30 separate drum circles all doing their own thing. Some feature instruction, others are just jam sessions. You'll hear everything from Latin infused conga beats to traditional African rhythms to improvisational, spontaneous drum beats.

Just another excuse to pick up a small djembe (we recommend the 16" to 20" ones we carry at www.pagansounds.com) and keep it with you in the back of the car or packed in your carry on luggage!

Happy drumming...
